A sure sign of summer: the 3rd Weekend of July rolls around, and it’s time for the H.D. (Huntington’s Disease) Mower Race Weekend in Sparta (Grand Rapids), Michigan!

The STA-BIL Lawn & Garden Mower Racing Series returns to the Paul C. Mitchell Airport in Sparta for the 9th annual STA-BIL Great Lakes Summer Nationals Race for Huntington’s Disease Research, Saturday-Sunday, July 16-17, 2011.

The Mikula Family and the Michigan Lawn Mower Racing Association have again put together a great weekend of lawn mower racing, hospitality and overall good vibes as racers from far and wide converge on the Grand Rapids area for what has become a crown jewel of the STA-BIL Series.

We are proud to announce that over the past nine years, this event as raised $100,000 for Huntington’s Disease Research!  Let’s keep it mowing!

Huntington’s Disease Research Raffle

Once again a very special raffle will take place for Huntington’s Disease Research.  A brand new John Deere racing mower built Jayson Mikula will be raffled off during the weekend.  Charlie Bowen donated the engine this year. The rest of the parts where supplied by Four Seasons and Jim and Jayson Mikula.  Doc Kuhfeldt’s idea for the HD Mower Raffle lives on, and the contest gains new MOWmentum every year!

  • 1st Prize: JP/IMOW Class racing mower built by Jayson and Jim Mikula
  • 2nd Prize: Battery operated John Deere riding toy tractor

Donation:  $2.00 per ticket or three (3) for $5.00.  Drawing will be held Sunday, July 17, 2011.  Winners do not need to be present to win, and delivery of the mower will be worked out with the winner.  If the winner does not want the racing mower, a new John Deere D100 riding mower, or $1500 cash can be substituted.  100% of the proceeds go to Huntington’s disease research.

Lunch will be served on both Saturday and Sunday, concessions available both days.  Please RSVP to Jayson Mikula for the free lunch.

Verbal confirmations for racer turnout this year seem to be at a near high.  We are expecting the Western Ontario Outlaws to attend for an exhibition race as well as some of the affiliated clubs in Michigan.  It should be a great weekend!

We will again ward “Weekend Champion” trophies in all classes, counting heats and features from both days.  Special thanks to Jim and Karen Keech for the unique tractor trophies for this award!

Camping will be allowed in the pits as long as there are no fires or fireworks.  This must be strictly adhered to because the track is located on airport grounds.  There are also public camp grounds located about 10 minutes from the track in Cedar Springs MI.

There will be 7 portable facilities on site, 2 located in the pits and 5 in the spectator area.
