A Note From USLMRA President Bruce “Mr. MowItAll” Kaufman

Each race in this year’s STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series will be covered by one of our own members, a designated “Pit Reporter” who’ll report back on the weekend’s happenings, the racing action, and mow!

This season’s race at the Cerro Gordo Speedway in Illinois was covered by our Pit Reporter Manny Torres.

What a great weekend in at the Cerro Gordo Speedway in Cerro Gordo, Illinois! On July 8,2016 racers representing over 11 states began gathering for 2 days of action packed lawn mower racing. With the USLMRA staff working alongside with the event host, Tommy Bennett and his team, spectators were witness to races in 10 classes ranging from Governed to factory experimental racing lawnmowers.

The weather was great and with a racing mower count of over 50 mowers, it turned out to be a near perfect weekend of racing with only two caution flags the entire weekend with none on the first day.

After Saturday night’s racing we enjoyed free food and live music with a live band as our host went all out to show their hospitality and make us feel welcome and it was appreciated by all. Tommy Bennett and his team did everything they could and worked hard to give us the best track they could. After everything was over on Sunday they made it a point to go to every racer and personally thank them for coming. They were extremely pleased with the weekend’s races and how USLMRA put on the show.

The highlight had to be the husband and wife team of Robert and Holly Walker from Texas who made the trip. Both being law enforcement officers from Kemp, Texas and Robert being the Police Chief. They had the opportunity to meet and share professional experiences with the Police Chief from Cerro Gordo.

On the track, the packed field in the IMOW and GP provided some exciting racing with Eric Corner wining in the IMOW Class both days and Brian Bennett also wining both day in the GP class. But the big surprise was Jason Brown from nearby Decatur, Illinois in his first USLMRA National Point race winning in the SP Class both days also. Jason Murray From Arkansas showed his skill behind the wheel with two victories In the FXS Class and 1 victory on his AP. These were just a couple of highlights from the weekend of racing.

Thanks to Illinois LMRA President Todd Tornow for bringing this event into the STA-BIL National Lawn Mower Racing Series.

However the most notable thing I witnessed was after all the activities of the weekend was our host, Tommy Bennett personally made it a point to go and thank every racer for attending after all the racing was completed. This is something I had never witnessed in the past.

Well worth the trip!
