K&N Filters Lawn Mower Racing Team Grabs 6th in National Points

K&N Filters Lawn Mower Racer Ken Jones has mowed to a top ten finish in the 2012 STA-BIL Lawn & Garden Mower Racing Series, grabbing 6th Place with 2,350 national points at the 20th Anniversary STA-BIL Keeps Gas Fresh Finals held Labor Day in Delaware, Ohio.

Jones, of Granville, Illinois has been racing with the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association since 1995 and turned in his best performance of his career, clipping to four top five finishes in the 2012 STA-BIL Series, which runs Labor Day to Labor Day.

Jones posted the highest national point total of his career, highlighted by a second and fourth place finish at the Jim Keech Memorial Race For Huntington’s Disease in Sparta, Michigan and two second place finishes at the STA-BIL America’s Heartland Summer Nationals at River Bottom Raceway in Carlisle, Iowa. USLMRA National Points are awarded for 1st-5th places and for registering, starting and finishing a race.

Jones entered the STA-BIL Finals in 5th Place with 2,150 national points, and needed a solid race to finish in the top ten in the A Prepared Class, which features 4-stroke engines, 10.5 hp and under, with a factory maximum stock original displacement of 22 cubic inches. His mid 1960s TS Rugg mower with an 8hp Tecumseh engine was clipping along the 1/10th mile dirt track at 24.515 mph when he blew a belt on lap 14.

“When I blew the belt I thought my season was done, and my top ten finish had slipped away,” said Jones. “But due to my solid points position heading into Nationals, and some good luck, the lawn mower racing gods smiled upon me and I was able to take home the glory for K&N Filters.

More than 120 racing lawn mower racers from 20 states and Canada competed in bladeless competition at speeds up to 50mph at the 2012 STA-BIL Keeps Gas Fresh Finals at the Delaware County Fairgrounds in Delaware, Ohio. National Champions were crowned in 11 classes, with winners receiving trophies, bragging rights and garden gnomes.
